All the Grandparents

Hi, friends! Happy Labor Day!  So, yesterday morning, I woke up craving something different for breakfast. I still wanted something carb-y and delicious, so I opted for Pumpkin Spice Cheerios mixed with Rice Chex and banana slices. I wanted to make sure my breakfast had some protein in it, so I added two scoops of collagen to the almond milk. Perfect!  After breakfast, Quinn and I played Play-Doh for quite a long time. We opened a new set of tools that he got for his birthday, so we had all sorts of new things to try! A few hours later, Mal woke up and Murphy still needed to be walked, so I suggested a family walk. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize it was raining so hard.  So, Quinn and I played in the garage while Mal took Murphy for a walk. I also drank a couple of espresso shots with cream over ice.  I was so exhausted and really struggling to get my day going. I just wanted to go back to sleep, so I asked Mal if he could take over kid duty while I took a short nap. I ended

A Fannetastic Weekend

Good morning and Happy Labor Day! My parents are here to celebrate Mazen’s birthday this week, and before that we hosted The Fannetastics  for the night! On Friday our weather was cold and dreary, and Thomas and I went out to Fuzzy’s Tacos for dinner with Mazen. Tacos and chips and Dos Equis, oh my! Saturday morning breakfast fun! Our weather continued to be chilly and wet, so we went to the gym, tidied up the house, and headed to Whole Foods for groceries and lunch. Mazen and I also had a fashion show so he could try on the 10+ pairs of pants I ordered for him! Anne and Matt arrived late afternoon, and we had cheese and crackers and drinks before heading out to dinner. We went to Tavola  for dinner. While there was a little bit of a wait, we got the burrata and some vino in the bar area. (Anne enjoyed a really cool mocktail made of juice and tonic.) For dinner I had the shrimp with gorgonzola sauce over angel hair. SO delicious! We shared a cheesecake four ways f

Dear Mark: The PURE Study

For today’s edition of Dear Mark , I’m addressing just one question. It’s not even a question, really. It’s a study. In the comments to a post from last week, Pedro dropped a line about some very cool research. Hello Mark. No miss: http://ift.tt/2vBUyb7 No way would I miss that one, Pedro. Thanks for the note. This wasn’t quite a question, but it gives good fodder for me to riff on a few things. First, as I have said for a decade “The less glucose you burn in a lifetime, the healthier you’ll be and the longer you’ll live.” A new study—the PURE study—seems to hint at that. They looked at the dietary intakes of over 135,000 individuals from 18 countries with an average followup of about 7.5 years. They saw what people said they ate then watched what happened to them. Turns out that people who ate the most carbs had the highest risk of dying. People who ate more saturated fat than is recommended (under 10% of energy) had longer lives. People who ate more protein (even animal) a
