Quinn’s First Easter Lamb Cake

If you’ve followed CNC for a while now, you might remember our family’s special Easter lamb cake. It appears every year at our celebration, and the kids in the family typically take responsibility for making it. Growing up, I remember my sister and I helping my mom make the lamb cake for my Grammie’s Easter celebration at her house, and I’m pretty sure just about all of my cousins had their turn too.

Particularly in the past year or so, Quinn has really started to show an interest in cooking and baking, so Mal and I asked him if he wanted to make this year’s lamb cake. (Grandma was really excited about it, too!) We showed Quinn a photo, and he was immediately ALL about it. He even started brainstorming ideas for the cake! Well, ok, he was just really excited about all of the frosting and candy that was involved! 🙂

When Stop & Shop reached out about partnering on an Easter blog post, I knew immediately what I wanted to share: Making this year’s lamb cake with Quinn. It’ll be his first, so it’s a great way to document our family tradition. Speaking of documentation, Quinn was really into shopping for ingredients and helping me with the photography at our Stop & Shop in Norwell, Massachusetts.

The kid definitely has an eye for it! He even made me “back up” and pose for the photo below. Haha!

Stop & Shop had everything we needed for our lamb cake (and great prices, too!), including cake mix, frosting, shredded coconut, paper grass, jelly beans, mini robin egg candy, and even a brightly-colored placemat to enhance our Easter creation. I was surprised to see that Stop & Shop had so many fun items for Easter baskets, including gift cards, coloring books, decorative eggs, candy (chocolate bunnies, jelly beans, mini eggs), and healthier items (granola, trail mix, fruit). I’m sure I’ll pop in before Easter Sunday for some goodies to add to Quinn’s basket as well as some last-minute supplies – fresh flowers and ingredients for our family brunch and dinner – for Easter.

When we got home from the grocery store, Quinn immediately grabbed his “cooking stool” and wanted to make the cake. He was such a good helper and we had a lot of fun!

I love that Quinn loves cooking as much as I do. He’s really starting to get the hang of it with regard to the different steps involved in the process.

Once the cake batter was in the mold, we popped it in the oven It was our first time using a 3-D mold, so I was a little nervous with how our lamb would turn out, but it worked great!

Once our little lamb cooled, we decorated him with frosting and shredded coconut. Then, Quinn placed his jelly bean eyes and nose on his face.

After that, we finished our baking project with paper grass and some candy robin eggs.

Quinn was so proud of his first lamb cake (and really loved the leftover jelly beans). I think we’re definitely ready for Easter Sunday now!
