Weekly Link Love—Edition 7

The First Six Weeks

Six weeks has come and gone! I remember when Mazen was a baby repeating to myself “the first six weeks are just about survival.” I mentally prepared for the same this time around. I re-read Mazen’s first six weeks post, and overall have most of the same things to report this time around. I would say Mazen was a little harder to soothe and calm than Birch. Mazen had to have all five of the Happiest Baby Ss (swaddle, side, suck, sway, shush) and Birch is usually happy with 2-3 of them. Some people have told me that might be because I’m a more relaxed mom this second time around.

I might be more relaxed, but it hasn’t been easy! Birch’s first month was hard mostly because I was only getting about 5-6 hours of broken sleep a night and we had several minor-but-annoying issues (see below). But right around one month he started sleeping a little longer, and since then we’ve been sailing a little smoother.

Our first month started out with a nasty sickness the first week we were home. Thomas was very sick for two days and I was mildly sick for one. That did not start us out on the best foot.

Then I started to have signs of yeast and we were diagnosed with thrush. Birch was given two weeks worth of nystatin. His symptoms were always mild from the thrush itself, and I believe the nystatin caused a snowball effect of secondary symptoms that led to even more problems! I ended up having to take oral Diflucan a week later when my shooting pains got a little worse. But that seemed to finally knock it out.

Birch was pooping ALL the time during his two weeks of nystatin. I just thought he was a normal poopy newborn. He was waking up frequently at night and pooping, sometimes going 3-4 times in a row. His little bottom got so raw from all the wiping, so we had to deal with a bad diaper rash as well. However, as soon as the nystatin course was complete, his pooping regulated to much more reasonable frequency. He started sleeping longer right away, and his rash cleared up quickly. Finally we were normal! I’m not sure what we could have done differently, but I do caution anyone with babies prescribed oral nystatin to look for those side effects.

Lately we’ve been getting anywhere from a 3-5 hour stretch followed by 2.5 to 3 hours for the last two night segments. (Most nights are 3.5/4 + 3 + 2.5). I’m getting closer to 8, sometimes 9 hours of broken sleep, and that is so much better than what we were doing.

B slept in the rock and play for the first month. When we first tried putting him in the bassinet, he cried and we gave up quickly. I think we probably could have just done a little more soothing, but we switched to the rock n play for a month because he liked that right away. We successfully transitioned to the bassinet at one month. I’m so glad because it was expensive and also I feel more comfortable with him sleeping flat on his back than reclined. Our Halo Bassinet has the vibrating feature, and I think that has been key! B seems to love any of the vibrating chairs he has been a guest in, so I just ordered this one which was so cheap!

B is nursing 2-3 times a night, depending on when “bedtime” is (sometimes it’s 7; sometimes it’s 9:30 – we never know when naps end and night begins!) What has been AMAZING (knock on wood) is that nighttime soothing has been at a minimum. I remember having to spend a long time getting Mazen back to sleep at night. Birch needs a fair amount of soothing for naps, but at night I put him awake in the bassinet and he coos and grunts around for 10 minutes and then magically falls asleep. The whole “drowsy but awake” thing never worked for me before. I am HOPING that this leads to self soothing and sleeping through the night without sleep training, but only time will tell (and the four month sleep regression!)

This photo was taken of a nap, hence the paci, but we don’t use one at night….as of now. I remember Mazen got so addicted to his that we’re trying to avoid it for nights. B does love it for naps and when he’s fussy. He’s just learning how to really hold it in.

Naps are either 30 minutes or less in the bassinet or crib OR nice a long in the solly wrap or in someone’s arms. It’s kind of a trade off: do you want time or your arms 🙂

We like the Woombie but I like the Ollie a little better!

Breastfeeding has been just as hard this time as the first go-around. Both of my boys had shallow latches that widened with age, and I think my nipples just need that first month to get used to it all. The yeast made this time around very painful at times. I actually wonder if I had some yeast with Mazen too but just didn’t know what was causing the pain. As of now, breastfeeding is mostly comfortable and we’re in a good groove.

I am trying to be a bit more proactive with pumping this time around. (I ALWAYS type pumpking!!) My pump from six years ago was a giant Medela that I always thought hurt and never got much milk. I have a Motif Duo that I LOVE that I got for free through Aeroflow Breastpumps. They actually do all the insurance legwork for you and your pump simply comes in the mail. The Motif is small, cordless, rechargable, super portable, and much more comfortable than my old pump. Around six weeks I have started to pump just a small amount (like 5 minutes per side) about 30 minutes after the first morning feeding. I am not going back to an office so I don’t need a huge stash, but it’s been so nice to have bottles in the fridge just in case I need them. I can get a full bottle in 2 days compared to maybe a week of collecting let down milk (which is also more of a hassle.)

Thomas is a wonderful dad! I said to him the other night how cool it is that he went from knowing almost nothing about baby care to being an expert in caring for his own. At night he does the diaper change while I get all set up to nurse, and it’s been so nice to share the nighttime duties. He’s also great with baby wearing and diaper changes. Birch’s favorite activity with his dad is bath time! He LOVES his bath and never cries.

Both of my boys were around 8 pounds at birth, just over 10 pounds at one month and 11 pounds at 6 weeks. As many of you often say, my genes must be super strong! (Either that or Thomas and Matt are more similar than we all realize 🙂 )

You can probably tell who is who based on the photo and outfits, but they are so similar!!

5 Recipes I’ve Made for 5 Years Now

Hi, friends!

Over the years, I have created and published soooooo many recipes – yet it’s amazing that I make the same ones again and again.  I definitely have some tried-and-true favorites, and I know you guys love a lot of the same recipes. Great minds think alike, right? Personally, I think the key to recipes that stand the test of time is that they’re both super easy and (obviously) delicious. Many of my 3-ingredient dinners or make-ahead meals are just so convenient and end up in our regular rotation. Even after 5 years, we just don’t get tired of planning them into our weekly meal plan.

That said, here are 5 of the recipes that I’ve made for the past 5 years (or more). If any of these recipes haven’t been tested out in your kitchen, I highly recommend giving them a try, especially during this time of year when we are all short on time, but still want to keep our diets in check. Master Your Macros Challenge [Starts January 7th]

Hi, friends!

Can you believe it’s already December 13th? Holy cow, the holiday season is flying by! I also can’t believe it’s just about time to start thinking about New Year’s resolutions and goals. Ok, ok… I know the whole New Year’s resolution concept gets a little overhyped, and I’ve personally gone back and forth as to whether or not I am going to partake this year. However, I know myself, and I know that I love fresh starts and making plans (Type A right here) to move myself towards achieving my goals.

What I’ve found throughout the years is that ACCOUNTABILITY works really well for me – whether I am making a resolution at the new year or any time throughout the year (aka the “10,000 Steps Per Day Challenge”). Even better is taking on a goal with friends or a community, who is experiencing the same challenges and successes – and who is there to support you all along the way. It truly makes the experience more enjoyable and helps you get that much close to achieving what you set out to do!

That said, I am SO EXCITED to share the Carrots ‘N’ Cake “Master Your Macros” Challenge! This group challenge is intended to jumpstart your motivation, teach you about macros, and help you “master” how they fit into your lifestyle with the support of the CNC community. Tracking macros is different for everyone, which, of course, is why they are so great. Once you figure out how they can work for you, they become an awesome tool for healthy living and balanced food choices. During the challenge, you’ll work with a nutrition coach to find the right macro balance and eating habits to fuel your lifestyle and goals.

Related (since I get this question a lot): You don’t need to follow a specific diet to track macros. You can be vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, AIP, low-carb, etc., and macros will still work for you. The thing is – if you don’t know how to hit your protein goal, for example, macros can be challenging. Working with a nutrition coach to address some of these personal challenges will teach you what you need to do, so you can go off on your own and track like a champ!

Ok, back to details about the challenge…

The “Master Your Macros” Challenge starts on January 7th for everyone, but you have the choice of a 4- or 8-week plan. Each plan includes your own personal macronutrient calculation (protein, carbs, and fat for both workout and rest days) as well as one-on-one coaching to help you through tracking challenges and support you throughout your plan. You’ll also receive recipes, grocery shopping lists, and the support of the CNC community via our private Facebook group.

Which plan is right for you? You can choose between a 4- or 8- week macro coaching program, and the best fit totally depends on your goals. If you have longer-term goals, need accountability, or you’re newer to counting macros, join the 8-week challenge. If you are someone who has counted macros in the past or just needs a motivation jumpstart, the 4-week option is a great choice. Both plans are included in the “Master Your Macros” Challenge and will receive plenty of weekly motivation and support to help you succeed!

I’ll be joining you guys for the challenge and supporting you through the 4- or 8-week journey. (Let’s just say, I’ve already taken full advantage of the holiday season, and I know I will need a jumpstart once the new year comes! Holy cookies and booze!) I’m really excited to do this together – share recipes, weekly wins, and struggles. Did you see that Young House Love has a new furniture line at Wayfair!? I love everything about their style! The scalloped sideboard above is my favorite piece, and I wish I had a need to buy this table!

Let There Be Smart Lights

Our house is getting smarter by the day! We now have six Alexa plugs that control our main floor and bedroom lights. Since my hands are often occupied with a baby, it has been amazing to control the lights with my voice! On the main floor, Alexa controls the three lamps there if we say “Alexa lights on/off.” We also have the Christmas tree on a timer plug but you can voice activate it too by saying “Alexa turn on tree.”

When we go upstairs at night, we say “Alexa goodnight” and she turns off the main floor lamps and turns on the upstairs ones. We have my nightstand lamp along with a new Himalayan salt lamp on two plugs up there. The salt lamp is great for nighttime with Birch when I need light but want to keep things dim. It creates just the perfect amount of light to see for diaper changes and nursing. We just say “Echo (because we have an Echo up there) turn on salt” in the middle of the night and we can see without getting out of bed.

Finally, we have the Amazon Cloud Cam (which I bought bundled with the Echo Spot which has a screen) as our nursery monitor and it’s been going great (for the few crib naps we get.) I LOVE that we can see it from our computers and phones. Another great bonus is that I can get a motion alert on my phone anytime he moves, so I don’t have to always be watching the screen. I didn’t know if we would like it more or less than a traditional baby monitor (which we still have) but so far, liking it MORE! At night when he moves to his nursery someday, we can use the Echo in our room to keep the screen on him.

Bra Style

Thanks to all of you who recommended the Brooks Juno for nursing. The velcro-down straps are great and it has great support. I’m still wearing my sports bra on the outside of my workout clothes for home workouts. It’s low on fashion but high on functionality!!

Leggings Update

And finally a leggings update. The current four pairs in my rotation are:

Favorite overall: Align. They just fit better than the Wunder Unders and the waist is the most comfortable. They do have a little pilling in the crotch but I don’t wear them for workouts. I think they look best with clothes too! I sort of wish I’d gotten a second pair instead of the Wunders but I’m happy to have both. I’ve decided the Athletas are my favorites for workouts, and the Amazon ones are a bit too compression-y and tight but I still like them a lot for the price. I just never reach for them unless everything else is in the laundry.

Easy Sweet Potato Cashew Wrap + Quinn’s Holiday Pageant

Hi, guys! Another “Quinn and Mumma” day is in the books, and I have to admit it was one of my favorites to date! 🙂

It started like a lot of them with snuggles and TV on the couch followed by breakfast. This particular morning, Quinn requested oatmeal for breakfast. OATMEAL, people! Apparently, they eat it at his school, and he really likes it. Being the oatmeal fan that I am, I jumped at the chance to make it (with “brown sugar,” of course). I even added a little extra brown sugar and talked it up the best I could as a super special bowl of oatmeal. (I mean, it was the first time he was going to it eat at home, so I was pumped. New foods for picky eaters are very exciting!) I also made myself a bowl of oatmeal, so we could eat the same breakfast together.

Well… Quinn sat down at the table with me, took one look at the oatmeal, and said he didn’t want it. Whomp whomp. I tried to figure out why, but he said he just changed his mind and wanted a PB&J Bar and yogurt smoothie instead. Ughhhh, it was such a let down. I didn’t make a big deal of it, but I was bummed. Oh, well. Maybe next time, right? At least we know that oatmeal might be a breakfast option soon enough!

After breakfast, we got ourselves ready for the day. I had a few client check-ins to do, so Quinn put the finishing touches on his sunglass stand while I chatted with them. How cool is Quinn’s sunglass stand?! He’s obsessed with it and chooses a new pair to wear like 5 times a day! 🙂

Once we were ready to go, we headed to the gym. I ran on the treadmill while Quinn played in the playroom. It was a quick trip because we had quite the agenda planned for the rest of the morning.

After the gym, we stopped by the grocery store and then headed straight to swim lessons. If you follow me on Instagram Stories, you might have seen our little fish swimming under water. Just like that, our “baby” can swim! It really seemed to happen overnight.

Quinn did such a great job swimming under water, he moved up to the next level!! He was so proud of himself, and I can’t even explain how happy I was for him. It was a proud momma moment for sure!

Before we left, Quinn took some time to freshen up and blow dry his hair! 🙂

Back at home, we were both hungry for lunch. It was a busy morning, so I’m glad that I had some items prepped ahead and ready to go. I made some roasted sweet potatoes and onions in my air fryer and added them to a Maria & Ricardo’s tortilla along with an easy cashew cheese for quite the delicious lunch!

I recently partnered with Maria and Ricardo’s, who makes authentic, wholesome, and seriously delicious (non-GMO) tortillas. I’ve actually been a fan of the brand for many years now, so I’m really excited that we’re working together! I spread some cashew sauce on an Original White Flour Tortilla and then topped it with sweet potatoes, onions, and arugula for a quick, delicious, and nutritious lunch!

The wrap was so easy to make – thanks to some meal prep earlier in the week. Once the cashew sauce and veggies were made, it came together in a matter of minutes. It’s also super customizable based on your taste preferences and what’s in your fridge. Really, the options are endless as far as veggies go! 🙂 I have a feeling you’ll see this lunch (or variations of it) again and again on CNC!

After lunch, Quinn had some quiet time while I showered and cleaned up the house. His school holiday pageant was later that night, and we were hosting Papi and his girlfriend, Lori, for drinks and apps before since they were planning to attend. Our house was a complete disaster, so I had some work to do!

Unfortunately, Boston traffic to the South Shore ended up sending Papi and Lori straight to the pageant location due to time constraints. We didn’t have our “happy hour” with them, but we all still had an awesome time at “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas.” Quinn really enjoyed himself and did a great job as a “Who!”

Keto Masterclass Testimonial: Newfound Confidence and Motivation

When I met my husband in 2014 he introduced me to the world of Paleo. He himself began eating Paleo a few years prior after hearing about Robb’s book in a podcast.

I remember seeing a copy of The Paleo Solution sitting on the end table in his living room one of the first times I came over to his home. My first thought was oh great, he’s a health nut. I worried that my love for sandwiches would be end up being a deal breaker for this health conscious guy but that wasn’t the case at all.

Whether it was sharing a story he’d heard on a podcast that morning or cooking us a healthy dinner in the evening, throughout the next year of dating he politely showed me what it was like to eat healthier. We got married in 2016 and though I definitely tried to stick with these healthy ways of eating I still struggled.

In October of 2016 I decided to try the autoimmune protocol (AIP) to try to heal my guts health. My digestive system was always something that had given me problems.

One day I heard about AIP on The Better Everyday podcast and figured it was something I should definitely try. I ended up feeling so much better a couple months in (and ended up shedding some pounds as well!).

By February of 2017 I was down to my lowest weight I had reached in a very long time and was feeling healthier and stronger. The end February we received wonderful news that we’d be expecting our first baby. I was over the moon with happiness!

A few months into my pregnancy we found out I had a condition called Vasa Previa. It’s very dangerous for the mother and baby if not handled the right way and needless to say I was scared and very stressed.

Along with that stress came old eating habits and I ended up gaining almost 60 lbs by the end of my pregnancy. Thankfully God had a wonderful plan and though she came to us a few weeks early we finally got to meet our baby girl on November 3 of 2017.

After her arrival I knew I needed to really get back on the health wagon. I had no idea just how hard that would be. And honestly it took me 9 months to finally really buckle down and try to get healthier.

By the time I was 10 months postpartum I was no longer breastfeeding and I knew I wanted to look into the keto way of eating. I had seen articles on Pinterest and folks on Instagram posting their transformations and recipes and it really caught my attention.

I shared this interest with my husband and he was totally on board. After gaining some “baby” weight himself when I got pregnant he also wanted to shed a few lbs and get back to a healthy routine of eating.

One day he got an email from Robb sharing about a discount he had going on Keto Masterclass and we hopped on that wagon and purchased it.

We began listening to the modules and really dove into the knowledge Robb had to share.

We purged our pantry of everything that could be tempting/not on the plan and gave most of it away to other family members.

We began making weekly plans of meals we wanted to have and kept it simple.

I loved the ways Robb explained how to make one meal into something more interesting for a couple nights. Whether it was different seasoning or a sauce. Having variety was key to our success.

We fortunately didn’t endure the “keto flu” too badly but I think a big reason why we didn’t was our consumption of electrolytes. We both try to drink it everyday and definitely know when we miss a day!

The first time I put on my pre pregnancy jeans to take our “before” pictures I was so shocked just how far I’d let myself go. I couldn’t get them up past my hips let alone button them.

I can now say that these jeans fit almost perfectly and that is thanks to keto.

Living this way has been life changing. It has given me confidence I haven’t had in a very long time. It’s given me motivation to work out because I want to get stronger as well as healthier.

Robb said to find “your why” and the moment I had my baby girl she became my why. I want to live the best healthiest life I can for her. To be the example of good health she sees everyday. To watch her grow up. To someday help her as she runs around with her own children. She is my why and Robb has truly helped me achieve the understanding of how to continue in this health journey.

It’s been a wonderful journey and it’s only just begun! I can’t wait to see where I’ll be in a few months.
