Organic Chicken Bone Broth Powder – The Next Truvani Product!

A couple months ago I was in L.A. for a business trip and one of my colleagues looked over and asked what my daughter Harley was drinking. I told him it was my homemade bone broth that I brought all the way from Charlotte, and he couldn’t believe it… first of all, that I’d taken the time to make it from scratch, package it up, freeze it, put it in a cooler, and travel across the country with this in my luggage.

Shorts That Don’t Suck

Guys, this blog post was so fun to put together! 🙂 It was, for sure, a labor of love, and I can’t even tell you how many pairs of shorts I tried on for it… 40? 50 pairs? Maybe even more! But it was totally worth it because, as someone who has strong, muscular legs, I know how difficult it can be to find shorts that actually fit my thighs, don’t ride up, and drive me crazy. And, of course, I wanted to do my due diligence before making my recommendations to you all. 

In the past, I hardly ever wore shorts, and, if I did, they rarely went much above my knees. Over the years, I’ve gotten over my unhealthy obsession with hating my legs and have come to appreciate and maybe even enjoy wearing shorts. I’ve learned it’s all about finding shorts that move WITH you and make you FEEL great. Wearing an ill-fitting pair is one of the worst things ever. For real. I mean, how uncomfortable is wearing shorts that you’re constantly thinking about, pulling down and adjusting? Ugh, that’s the worst. Who has time for that nonsense? 

The shorts below are definitely more casual (lots of jean favorites), but all of them are wear-tested in real life and score high on style and, most importantly, comfort. I love all of the shorts recommended below, but I listed them in order of “obsession” with my top, top, top favorites first. I also included a bonus workout pair of shorts at the bottom, which are a tried-and-true favorite and might have even inspired another blog post: “Workout Shorts That Don’t Suck!” I hope you guys find these suggestions helpful and rock your shorts with confidence this summer! 🙂

Caslon Rolled Denim Boyfriend Shorts – Love, love, love! These rolled denim boyfriend shorts couldn’t be more comfortable! I love that they’re casual enough for everyday wear, but stylish enough for wearing out to dinner with friends. They come in both regular and petite sizes, and they’re priced right at $58. I see myself wearing them a TON this summer! I ordered them in a size 25, and they fit perfectly – a little roomy in the hips, but not droopy!

Very similar to the shorts above, but not pictured – only because I bought them last last summer – but worth a mention because they’re so darn comfortable and J.Crew still sells them. (I assume they were popular last year!) The High-Rise Denim Short in Brixton Wash is super flattering with the same rolled cuff style, but they have a slightly higher rise on the waist. I own them in size 25. Both pairs of jean shorts mentioned are great – it just depends what style you prefer.

Modern Metro Shorts – I’ve mentioned these shorts a couple times on the blog already because they are so amazing! They’re insanely comfy, and I know I’ll wear these a ton – around the house, running errands, going on family hikes, and to the beach. They’re kind of a hybrid between a regular short and a board short, but the fabric is thick and stretchy, so they’re nice enough to wear everyday, but more casual and sporty. I originally ordered these in an XS, but ended up exchanging them for an XXS. If you’re in between sizes, I’d size down – they seem to run big.

Seersucker Every Day Shorts – How fun are these seersucker shorts? It was love at first sight with these babies, and they lived up to my expectations for sure. The fit, feel, and fashion came together perfectly with these shorts. They’re on the shorter side with a 3.5-inch inseam, but roomy enough that they don’t ride up. These shorts also come in pink, white, and light teal! 🙂 I own them in a size 4.

Catherine Boyfriend Cutoff Shorts – Another jean favorite! Hey, I can’t help myself! 🙂 These ones are a bit longer than the ones mentioned above, comfortably frayed, and a little stretchy. The cuff at the bottom can be rolled as high or as low as you’d like. I own these shorts in a size 2.

Caslon Cotton Twill Shorts – And here’s a non-jean pair of shorts! 🙂 These cotton twill shorts have a hint of stretch, so they’re fitted without being super duper tight. They come in regular and petite sizes as well as other colors. I ordered them in a size 2.

Land’s End Cuff Shorts – I already mentioned these shorts on the blog, but they’re a longer style with adjustable cuffs. They come in different colors, and I bought them in a 4, which fit perfectly.

Brooks Chaser 3″ Shorts – An oldie, but goodie pair of shorts! I probably own 3 or 4 pairs of these shorts now, and they’re awesome for all kinds of workouts. They’re lightweight and semi-fitted, so they really move with you, especially over your thighs for movements like air squats, Cleans, Wallballs, etc. If you’re a fan of a longer short, Brooks makes a 5″ option and the plain black ones are on sale right now! 🙂 I own these in a size small.

On Healthy Living While Pregnant

Running on Bald Head last month


I wrote this post about pregnancy fitness at 23 weeks along with Mazen, and it was fun to re-read and compare this time to last. A lot of time has passed and so has my routine!

Running became a challenge almost immediately with Mazen. I think it was part physiological and part psychological. It’s already a challenge now, but I am more determined this time around to keep it in my routine.

So far I’ve continued to run, although my distance hasn’t crested 3.5 miles since January. Some days I feel amazing and like my old self, and some days I have to stop and walk every half mile. Other days I literally can’t run at all because every time I try my bladder feels like it’s going to burst despite being empty! I have to take it day by day. This spring weather is certainly helping though!

I’ve continued to take strength class with enthusiasm. Immediately after getting pregnant my body felt so fragile that I didn’t want to move around that much, but as I’ve entered the second trimester energy spike I’ve been pushing myself a little bit more with the weights and am feeling normal again doing all the cardio moves. I remind myself: “My arms and legs are not pregnant.” Just because I have a growing belly doesn’t mean my biceps should get a free pass to be lazy. (Meanwhile torso exercises like ab work are totally reasonable to modify.)I sometimes think I want to take the easier option “because I am pregnant” but I’m trying hard to really listen to my body and ask it if I really need the rest or modification or if I’m just creating an excuse to avoid a challenge. That said, I used to do 20 pound free weights and a 30 pound kettlebell, and I’ve already downgraded to 15 pound free weights and a 25 pound kettlebell for most of our exercises. They still feel very hard!

I haven’t been to yoga in a month, mostly due to our sunnier weather and being out of town for a week. Our studio isn’t that hot, so I feel ok with the temperature (and always bring cold water) but I’m not sure I’d be able to do as many of the floor and stomach moves. I am hoping to get back there soon to see how I feel. I do want to start going to the ACAC prenatal yoga class again soon because I loved it last time as a great way to unwind, focus on the baby, and connect with other moms.

I hope in a year I can get back to those soccer days! I miss soccer more than wine. 


Weight Gain

I remember with Mazen I gained a chunk of weight in the first trimester and then really slowed down once I got my appetite for healthy foods back. I am hoping I follow the same path this time because I definitely put on some weight this first trimester with all the nausea eating! I think with Mazen I really relaxed my diet in the beginning when I was sick and during the last month of pregnancy when I said “I better carpe diem!”

This time I feel more aware that every pound I gain on this side of the equation (that is not uterus, baby, blood, etc!) is a pound that I will eventually want to lose. How can I remind myself of this when all the delicious temptations of life present themselves? I think I need a picture of me post-Mazen remembering the hard work it took to get my figure back on my fridge. Or perhaps in my wallet when I’m most likely to be out to dinner and eating too much. Thankfully I am back to eating big salads for lunch and my old appetite has returned to normal – for now!



Now that I’m out of the first trimester craziness when I was eating anything and everything all the time, I’m not snacking that much and still doing three meals a day, mostly, with a late afternoon snack half the time. Most foods taste good again, and I’m craving seasonal things as the weather warms: salads, yogurt bowls, fresh fruit, and grilled meals.

I am obviously not drinking, so that helps to balance out those calories a little, although having mocktails do count! And lastly, I’ve been surprised that my sweet tooth has actually been better than it’s been in a really long time. I am wondering if warmer weather is to thank for that because I don’t crave sweets as much in the summertime.

I remember with Mazen getting to a point where I literally couldn’t fit much food in my stomach and having to re-adjust my meals to be more mini meals, so I am predicting that might happen again.

Clean Eating Chickpea Tacos Recipe

This clean eating chickpea tacos recipe is the perfect replacement for meat in tacos!

I haven’t been plant based all that long. It’s been about three months now. But in that three months, I’ve seen my A1C (blood sugar test results) come down from 5.9 to 5.1, I’ve lost nearly 30 pounds, my skin has cleared up a lot and I feel so much better!!

That being said, I love and adore Mexican flavors. Taco Tuesday is totally a thing for me. I love all things Mexican! But Mexican food can be very meat-heavy. Everything from tacos to taco salads tend to be loaded with meats and dairy to varying degrees. So when it came to taco night around here, I really had to get creative.

A folded tortilla filled with this Clean Eating Chickpea Tacos recipe for the filling and topped with arugula, tomatoes and avocado.

I know there are a ton of vegan options out there, but I wanted to choose something that would also be friendly to my blood sugar. Just because something is vegan doesn’t mean my blood sugar will be happy with it. Chickpeas have been one of the best foods so far in that department! I get tons of fiber and carbs without the ill effects I would normally see from other sources. I don’t know what makes chickpeas so magical, but they work great, so I went with it and this Clean Eating Chickpea Tacos recipe was the result!

This obviously won’t be as dense and “sturdy” as meat, but it’s a pretty good substitute for flavor. You really taste the spices more than the beans. If you find that the spices are too strong for you, you can always mash in another can of chickpeas, or cut the spices in half. But I love strong flavors, so I really went for it with this recipe.

I also used my clean eating chickpea flatbread recipe to make tortillas. I just added a little extra water to make the batter runnier so it would cook a tiny bit thinner. They weren’t as strong as a corn or wheat tortilla, but they did the trick and they were tasty!

Clean Eating Chickpea Tacos

A delicious option for you plant-based folks out there who still want to enjoy a good Taco Tuesday!

Course: Main Course

Cuisine: American, Mexican

Yield: 6 servings

  • 1 tbsp. oil
  • 15 oz. can chickpeas (no sugar added, rinsed and drained)
  • 1 tbsp. garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp. onion powder
  • 1 tbsp. chili powder
  • 1 tbsp. ground cumin
  • vegetable broth (for cooking, as needed)
  • your favorite taco toppings
  • your favorite tortillas


  1. Combine all the filling ingredient sin a large skillet.

  2. Mash the chickpeas with a potato masher or fork. Don't over smash them. Just enough to have mostly large pieces.

  3. Heat the mixture in the skillet. If the oil cooks out, ad vegetable broth to continue cooking. But only add 1 tbsp. at a time. If you add too much, you'll end up with refried chickpeas.

  4. When the mixture is fully heated and everything is mixed together, use it to build your tacos in place of meat.
