Why the Scale Fluctuates and Why It Doesn’t Mean You’re Not Making Progress

Image
It never fails that one of THE most frequently asked questions I receive is about the scale – specifically why it is or isn’t moving in a particular direction. The scale is a finicky tool, and its lack of transparency can lead you to believe that all of the hard work, time, and dedication your putting into healthy living isn’t paying off. But the truth is that body “weight” is influenced by so many factors outside of our control – those that don’t really change (height, bone density), and those that not only fluctuate from day-to-day, but sometimes from hour-to-hour! For years, I had a love-hate relationship with the scale… and from what I’ve heard, many of you can relate. I’d weigh myself in the morning and would essentially let the number that popped up dictate how the rest of my day would go. Many times, I’d step off the scale feeling down because I had gained a few pounds overnight. Even though I knew I didn’t gain body fat overnight, just seeing that higher number was enough for

Electrolytes and Keto: Why They Matter for the Transition

Image
The one piece of advice all newcomers to the ketogenic diet receive is to “get enough electrolytes.” It doesn’t matter what flavor of keto diet you’re talking about—paleo, carnivore, Primal, standard, clinical, mainstream, salami-and-cream-cheese. They all mention the importance of getting your electrolytes, particularly during the transition from a higher-carb diet. I’ve said it. I say it. It really is important. Heck, a major part of the much-maligned “keto flu” can be directly attributed to inadequate intake of sodium, potassium, and magnesium. Oftentimes, increasing your electrolytes stops the flu from happening in the first place. Why, though? Why Do Early Stages Of a Ketogenic Diet Trigger an Increase In electrolyte Requirements? One of the first things that happens when you go keto is you lose a bunch of glycogen from almost everywhere. For one, depletion of liver glycogen—the storage form of carbohydrates in the body—is the trigger for the liver to begin producing ketone

Three Years Ago Our friends Maggie + Dave got married this past weekend! Dave is a long-time friend of Thomas’s. Shortly after Thomas and I started dating, he took me has his date to another friends’ wedding. (This was before you guys met him!) That night, Dave came up to me and said the nicest, kindest things about Thomas. That he was the most loyal and trusting friend imaginable and that I had a snagged really good guy. I knew I couldn’t let Thomas go after his best friend said such complimentary things! At the very same wedding, later that night, Dave rode the bus back to Richmond and sat next to Maggie and a romance blossomed. Three years later – they are married! And here they are the night before  our wedding! Rehearsal Dinner at Common House Thomas was one of Dave’s groomsmen and so we joined a group of family and friends for the rehearsal dinner at Common House on Friday night. The food was amazing! We enjoyed lots of great laughs and toasts. And I had one too
