The Friday 5

Image
Hi and happy Friday! I know it’s only the first week of December, but the holiday season already seems to be flying by. With just 3 weekend before Christmas, it’s going to be over in a blink of an eye – which, of course, is why we love 24 Days of Togetherness so much. We’re embracing all of our favorite activities and soaking in the best of the season. If you’re participating, please tag me on social media, so I can see what you’re up to! 🙂 In today’s edition of the Friday 5, I’m sharing 5 things I’m loving lately including our holiday cards, Quinn’s new winter coat, a healthier cold cereal, and the best shoes for Orangetheory Fitness. Happy December weekending, friends! 1. Holiday Cards from Minted We order our holiday cards from Minted every year, and I always love how they turn out! A Beginner’s Guide to Reading Scientific Research

Image
Scientific journal articles can be incredibly intimidating to read, even for other scientists. Heck, I have a Ph.D. in a research science and have authored scientific papers, but sometimes I look at a research report outside my field of study and just go, “Nope, can’t decipher this.” Learning to read them is an important skill, however, in today’s environment of what I call “research sensationalism.” This is where the popular media gets hold of a scientific research report and blows the findings WAY out of proportion, usually while misrepresenting what the researchers actually did and/or found. You know what I’m talking about. Unfortunately, you can’t trust popular media reports about scientific research studies. Too often, it’s shockingly evident that the people writing these reports (a) aren’t trained to evaluate scientific research, and (b) are just parroting whatever newswire release they got that morning with no apparent fact-checking. Thus, if staying informed is important to...

Do You Eat To Live Or Live To Eat?

Image
Eat To Live Or Live To Eat? Back when I started KERF in 2007, I would have labeled myself as someone who “lives to eat.” The percentage of time that I thought about food was high. My brain was often drifting of thoughts like: What should I have for a snack? What can I do to prep for dinner? What would be a good recipe for the goat cheese in the fridge? I would never have dreamed of skipping a meal and rolled my eyes when people said “I forgot to eat!” (How naive of 24-year-old me.) I general, I’d say my enthusiasm for food was high. That’s what would have made me declare “I live to eat!” How I shifted towards eat to live I used to have a lot more time My life today is very different than it was in 2007. I was young, I had no kids, I had just finished a year of weight loss, I had learned to cook for myself, and I was enmeshed in learning about nutrition. While I was working in PR, I was bored most of the time. Planning meals helped keep me entertained. Once I changed my career pa...

Peanut Sauce Recipe

Image
Learn how to make peanut sauce vegan and you’ll have the perfect triple-duty condiment! Use this vegan peanut sauce recipe to make a plant-based dip, salad dressing, or stir fry sauce. WAYS TO USE THE SAUCE I use this sauce all the time; it’s one of my staple salad dressings. Actually, I have grown to crave salads because of using it as a salad dressing. Pretty much any vegetable you can think of tastes good dipped or sauteed in the sauce. Trust me – you really need to learn how to make peanut sauce. It’s wonderful and flavorful and all of the things you want in a multipurpose sauce. Best of all, it tastes SO much better than a store-bough sauce. It travels pretty well too. Pack a bunch of veggies and bring a small container of the sauce along for dip. Or try it in a Thai recipe that calls for peanut sauce. Either way, it’s good, whole-food food. Particularly if you use a good quality white miso paste. Any way you enjoy it, it’ll be one of those staple condiments you’ll always...
