Tuna Melt Recipe

This tuna melt recipe is simple, uses minimal ingredients and is total, absolute comfort food!

Making a tuna melt is easy stuff. It’s something most people will love and for many, is right up there with a grilled cheese sandwich.

A delicious, golden brown Tuna Melt Recipe, just out of the oven and ready to eat.

And let’s face it, we could all use a little comfort food at the moment. These stay-at-home orders are no joke! And while I consider myself extremely lucky to be able to not only stay at home, but also work from home, the monotony of being home ALL. THE. TIME. is starting to get to me.

I shouldn’t complain. I know this. But I’m going to, just a little. And then I’m going to remember all those people on the front lines working in hospitals, feel thankful to be in the situation I’m in, put my big girl pants on, and deal with it. Because that’s really all we can do, right?

Mini Chef is feeling it too. He’s a trooper, for sure. But every once in a while, he comes to me and asks for “something good“, and I immediately know he wants comfort food.

So today, I made him his first tuna melt. I wasn’t sure he was going to like it because he’s not the biggest fan of cheese. But he took one bit and his eyes rolled back in his head. Before he took his second bite, he asked for a second sandwich. So I’m guessing it hit the spot for him.

And before anybody mentions the bread in the photo, yes, its sourdough bread. While I will always promote whole grain bread on this site, the truth is, I couldn’t get any other type of bread. The shelves are empty at the store and amazon only has so much. So forgive me this one indiscretion. I had to take what I could get.

This is not the most “calorie friendly” meal, but when you need something good, you need something good. Enjoy it and move on. That’s my philosophy anyway…

TUNA MELT SANDWICH

To make this delicious, comforting sandwich, you’ll need just a few items.

  • 1 can of tuna
  • 2 tbsp. mayo
  • 2 tbsp. finely chopped red onion
  • 1-2 tbsp. shredded cheddar

HOW TO MAKE A TUNA MELT

This tuna melt sandwich couldn’t be easier to make!

  • Make the tuna salad with the tuna, mayo and onion.
  • Then butter one side of each of your slices of bread.
Step one of this Tuna Melt Recipe is to butter the bread on one side.
  • Place one slice on a baking pan, butter side down.
  • Put half the tuna salad on your bread and sprinkle with cheese.
Step 2 is to put on the tuna salad and then sprinkle on the cheese.
  • Cover with the other slice of bread, butter side up.
Step three is to close the sandwich and bake it until golden brown.
  • You’ll bake this for a total of 14 minutes, flipping the sandwich at the 7 minute mark.
    The finished Tuna Melt Recipe.
  • Each oven will cook differently, so if the bread is not brown enough when you flip the sandwich, put it back for a couple more minutes. Usually no more than 10 minutes each side should get the job done.
