Measuring Ketones: What, When, Why, and How

Image
Keto is unique compared to other diets because there is an objective marker that tells you if you’re on the right track. With an easy at-home test, you can confirm that you are, in fact, in a state of ketosis. Regular readers probably know I’m not a big data tracker. My energy, sleep, workout performance, stamina, and enjoyment of life tell me almost everything I need to know about how well I’m doing. Nevertheless, I get that some people love to play the self-quantification game. In some medical situations, measuring ketones is advisable, even necessary, as well. I’m not a total curmudgeon about it. Heck, I’ve been known to check in on my blood glucose and ketones from time to time. If you’re thinking about testing, you should become familiar with the three different methods. Each has its own pros and cons. You’ll want to pick the option that’s right for you. Food and exercise are NOT a transactional relationship

Image
Food and exercise are NOT a transactional relationship. ⠀ I used to think that if I ran X number of miles, I “earned” a couple of glasses of wine or pasta for dinner because I burned a certain number of calories. ⠀ I also thought donuts could only be eaten on the weekend because I was having a “cheat” day. ⠀ And just because I went out to brunch with friends on Sunday, it meant that I had to skip an impromptu happy hour on Monday. What I’ve learned over the years, however, is that food is fuel and nourishment. Food is also fun, delicious, and full of all the GOOD things in life. It’s meant to be ENJOYED and it’s okay (more than okay, actually) if you LOVE what you eat ALL the time! And your activity level does NOT directly correlate to the type of foods you can enjoy. No food is morally better than another, Monday is as good a day to treat yourself as Friday, and you don’t need to burn 500 calories to “earn” 500 calories. The end.⠀ The post Food and exercise are NOT a

Cats + Piggies

Mazen and I have been doing more watercolors. This is my portrait of the cat legend, Lillian Valentine . I had fun telling Mazen how she was his auntie cat in heaven. It’s too bad they never got to meet – they had similar strong personalities Mazen also had fun doing some digital art on Thomas’s work iPad (that came with the fancy pencil). This is Pennywise!! Birchie’s animal interest continues to be Peppa Pig – and the Berenstain bears! I’ve had fun playing on the floor with him setting up little houses. Here are some meals of late! Breakfasts Plenty Cville has its own version of a sheet pancake. And this was  anything but flat as a pancake!  Hers was doubly thick and filled with strawberries! Years later, the end of a PB jar is still VERY exciting to me!! Filled with hot whipped banana oatmeal, blueberries, and granola on top! (Need more overripe banana ideas – check out Anne’s post: Healthy Recipes for Overripe Bananas !) Thomas picked up some bagels from Bodos (the

Instant Pot Chicken Chili Recipe

Image
This Instant Pot chicken chili could be your answer to, “what’s for dinner tonight?”! Everything, except the chicken, is a pantry item and made with easy-to-find ingredients. This is simple to put together and cooks up relatively quickly in your Instant Pot. INSTANT POT COOKING If you don’t have an Instant Pot (not “instapot” – sorry, but it had to be said. Just call me Karen.), you really should consider it. Particularly during the hotter, summer months. It’s an easy way to basically let dinner cook itself without warming up the kitchen. Yes, there’s a little steam at the end, but it beats heating up the kitchen for an hour while you cook! Plus, an Instant Pot will give you perfectly cooked meat every single time. I can’t imagine life without mine! INSTANT POT COOKING TIPS Always make sure you have at least 1 cup liquid in whatever you make (not a problem in this recipe!) Always check your plastic ring lid for cracks. It’s great to have an extra already on hand just in cas
