“Just Tell Me What to Eat” [My Meal Plan Framework]

Image
“Tina, just tell me what to eat!”  If I had a dime for every DM, blog comment, or email reply I received saying, “Tina, just tell me what to eat,” I’d be a gazillionaire! And I totally understand. Eating the ‘right’ foods in the ‘right’ amounts at the ‘right’ time of the day can be overwhelming and confusing – like we don’t already have enough going on juggling kids, work, household responsibilities… the list goes on. And on. I understand it’s tempting to just want to be told what to eat. One less thing to think about, right? Unfortunately, it’s not quite that simple. First of all, every person has different macro and caloric needs, so an across-the-board meal plan won’t always work. Second, we’re unique individuals with different likes and dislikes, food sensitivities, food access, etc., and that must always be taken into account. And, perhaps most importantly, it’s boring to eat the same foods day in and day out and that repeated pattern leads to binge eating that can seriously im

Support Now, Party Later!

Support now, party later! The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation New England Chapter’s signature fundraiser, A Night in White for the Cure , will be on August 6. Even though the event is postponed, the organization still needs your support now to keep patient programs running and research funded. A cure is in our lifetime — help us get there! WHY IBD? 3 million Americans have IBD, myself included. If you’ve followed my health journey for any amount of time, you know it hasn’t been easy . And that path is often difficult for IBD patients.  As you can imagine, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, everything the Foundation has built is now at risk. The need for education and support in the Crohn’s and colitis community has skyrocketed, a 500% increase. Simultaneously, the Foundation is experiencing an all-time low in funding. This is by far the greatest challenge the Foundation has faced in its 50-year history. The financial impact of this pandemic has been tremendous. In recognition of thi

Why Eating Less Doesn’t Always Work

Image
Off the bat, I should say that I’m actually a fan of eating less. I’m on record as saying that my goal is to figure out how few calories I can eat and still thrive. Still, eating less isn’t always the magic bullet people will hope it will be. There are many ways that eating less can go wrong. For weight loss, the advice to “eat less, exercise more” often doesn’t work like it “should” on paper. The weight-loss diet industry thrives on repeat customers who struggle to lose weight and keep it off. Dutifully following this strategy has led many people down the road to frustration and dejection, as they blame themselves for their failure to successfully lose weight. This is despite their best efforts to eat less. From a health perspective, eating less is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, caloric restriction may promote longevity. It certainly does in many animal models. Human evidence is still mixed, but I’m betting that the same is true for us. 1 On the other hand, long-term or

Birch is 18 months (and Our Porchrait!)

A group of photographers here in Cville have been taking porch portraits – aka porchraits – and sharing them on this Instagram feed. I love seeing everyone’s smiling faces and a glimpse into everyone’s different stay-at-home setting. Payment is on a sliding scale, and 50% of it goes to the Emergency Relief Fund for Artists.... Tuna Melt Recipe

Image
This tuna melt recipe is simple, uses minimal ingredients and is total, absolute comfort food! Making a tuna melt is easy stuff. It’s something most people will love and for many, is right up there with a grilled cheese sandwich. And let’s face it, we could all use a little comfort food at the moment. These stay-at-home orders are no joke! And while I consider myself extremely lucky to be able to not only stay at home, but also work from home, the monotony of being home ALL. THE. TIME. is starting to get to me. I shouldn’t complain. I know this. But I’m going to, just a little. And then I’m going to remember all those people on the front lines working in hospitals, feel thankful to be in the situation I’m in, put my big girl pants on, and deal with it. Because that’s really all we can do, right? Mini Chef is feeling it too. He’s a trooper, for sure. But every once in a while, he comes to me and asks for “ something good “, and I immediately know he wants comfort food. So today
