Episode 421 – Q&A with Robb and Nicki #14

Image
We’re back again with Robb and Nicki for Q&A #14! Show Notes: 1. [ 1:36 ] Weights while fasting? Ashley says: Hey Robb! First of all just wanna say thanks for all the hard work you do to get a healthy living message out to the world. I loved your book “Wired to Eat” and I just purchased the Keto Masterclass a few days ago. Excited to learn more! I have a question about lifting weights while in a fasted state, especially for a non-athlete. I’m fortunate enough to have a really nice gym at my office and what seems the best for me is to use my lunch hour to exercise, usually around 11 AM. I am far from what anyone would consider an athlete, but I’ve always enjoyed incorporating lifting weights into my exercise routines, which have been very sporadic over the years. I probably average two times a week of lifting but when I do, I try to push myself and lift heavy. Do you recommend I do this in a fasted state? What about taking BCAA’s beforehand? I see these marketed mainly to...

When Your Kid Tells You to “Lick Your Phone”

Image
Yesterday morning, I took Quinn to a doctor’s appointment. It was just a quick check-up for his ears . He got tubes put in about a year ago, so we go every 6 months to make sure they’re still doing their job. (Everything was a-ok.) While waiting for our appointment, I was playing around on my iPhone – doing who knows what. I was probably posting something on Instagram or scrolling mindlessly. I don’t even remember, and it honestly doesn’t matter for the point of this story. Quinn asked me something, and, because I was on my phone, I replied: “Say what, buddy?” (I now realize I say this wayyyy too often to him.) In response, he let out a frustrated sigh and said (what sounded like): “Lick your phone.” Quinn telling me to “lick my phone” definitely caught my attention. Right now, he’s battling a booger-y cold, so I made a joke about hygiene, but then it occurred to me what he actually said. Quinn told me to “brick my phone,” so I would pay attention to him. Holy cow, his statement h...

Food Labels Are LYING To You. Spot These Lies On The Package!

Image
Imagine the following scenario… You’re grocery shopping and trying to find a safe cooking oil. You’ve been cleaning up your diet and want something healthy to saute all those veggies you’ve been eating. Since you’ve read my investigations, you know that canola, soybean, and other processed oils are out because they are ridiculously bad for you. You see a shelf lined with cooking sprays like PAM, and recall hearing that those aren’t healthy for you either, until you see this one… It says simply “100% Extra Virgin Olive Oil” right there on the front of the can. 100% means 100%, right? So you think, “Bam! This is perfect! It contains just 100% olive oil without any nasty unhealthy additives”. Well, what if I told you this product was lying to you? That there’s not really 100% olive oil in that can? Smucker’s (the maker of Crisco) has been sued for misleading the public into believing this cooking spray contains 100% Extra Virgin Olive Oil – because it simply isn’t true ( 1 )...

Flying South With Two Kids

Image
We are SO EXCITED to be heading to the Florida Keys for Spring Break next week! We planned this trip a year ago and we’ve been counting down the days all winter. Ever since we knew we’d be having a baby, I’ve been telling Thomas every time we took a trip and things felt a little chaotic: “Just wait until we’re flying as a family of four!” And here we are. Honestly I’m quite anxious about all the logistics, and I’m trying to get as organized as possible. I’ve been packing little by little and making lists all week. We’re flying out of Richmond so that we could get a nonstop flight, so that does make things so much easier than running through an airport to make a connection (I’m looking at you CHARLOTTE Terminal E! Also, Please CHO airport, we need just one nonstop flight to somewhere warm in the winter!) Our flight leaves first thing in the morning, which means getting up at 3am and making the 1.5 hour drive to Richmond. Mazen will be fine. I’m crossing my fingers Birch doesn’t cry ...

Inside is a Little Bit of Everything

Hi, guys! This morning, I’m off to Phoenix for Beautycounter’s L.E.A.D. conference , which, in all honestly, I’m still surprised that I’m attending. Even this time last year, I wasn’t doing all that much with this part of my business. Sure, I loved the products, but I felt totally lost with what to do. Fast-forward to today, and things have really taken off. Now, I have a rockstar team of 8, and I’m absolutely loving what I’m doing. I never thought Beautycounter would become such a big part of my life, but I’m sure glad I decided to take the jump. Timing is everything, right? Anyway, I have a hodgepodge blog post for you today. It’s a little bit of everything, so I hope you enjoy it! 🙂 REMINDER: The April group for Master Your Macros kicks off Monday. If you’re looking to make a change in your diet and mindset about food, now is the time! We visited the New England Aquarium Tide Pool Open House at Derby Street over the weekend, and Quinn absolutely loved it. The tide pool is co...

The Definitive Guide To Autophagy (and 7 Ways To Induce It)

Image
Biological systems are self-maintaining. They have to be. We don’t have maintenance workers, mechanics, troubleshooters that can “take a look inside” and make sure everything’s running smoothly. Doctors perform a kind of biological maintenance, but even they are working blind from the outside. No, for life to sustain itself, it has to perform automatic maintenance work on its cells, tissues, organs, and biological processes. One of the most important types of biological maintenance is a process called autophagy. Autophagy: the word comes from the Greek for “self-eating,” and that’s a very accurate description: Autophagy is when a cell consumes the parts of itself that are damaged or malfunctioning. Lysosomes—members of the innate immune system that also degrade pathogens—degrade the damaged cellular material, making it available for energy and other metabolites.  It’s cellular pruning, and it’s an important part of staving off the worst parts of the aging process. In study aft...
