8 Tips For Keto on a Budget

Image
A criticism often leveled against the keto diet is that it’s more expensive than a “regular” (read: SAD) diet. There’s some truth to that. It does cost more to buy meat than ramen and beans. I personally spend more on groceries now than I did before finding Primal. Not only did I shift to buying different types of food, I also came to care more about food quality . I started choosing more pasture-raised meat and eggs, and more pesticide-free and organic produce and dairy. However, my grocery bills haven’t changed noticeably since going keto. If you’re already eating Primally, your daily foods don’t have to change that much if you decide to try keto. You’ll remove some (okay, most) of the fruits and root veggies, and sub in more above-ground veggies and probably some healthy fats. It’s not a substantial overhaul. However, if you’re coming from a standard high-carb, lots-of-cheap-packaged-foods diet straight into Primal+keto, it can be a shock to the wallet. Sure, I can tell you...

Birch: 8 Months Old

Image
^^My little stud 8 Months Old Birch is now 8 months old! He’s going to be one before we know it. Guess I need to start planning his first birthday party! I asked Mazen what theme we should plan and he said “Duh. Birch theme” matter-of-factly. I think that one’s a given Remember Mazen’s mason jar party ?! On The Move Birch will be crawling soon. He’s become so much more mobile and can climb up to a stand and rock on all fours. We’ve already started to baby proof a little, but we’re gonna have to do a lot more soon. Gussie + Birchie Gus and Birch have also become better friends now that Birch can mosey his way over to Gus and say hello (aka try to grab his tail!) Gus is very friendly, but if he gets poked a little too much he gets up and relocates to another spot. Look Who’s Talkin’! B can say mama and dada and also bath and ball. He’s a chatterbox, but most of his babbling is M’s, D’s, and B’s. I swear he pointed at Gus and said “dog” but since we never call Gus “dog” an...

Tips for Surviving an Elimination Diet on Vacation

Image
We’re off to Florida this morning, so I figured it would be the perfect time to share this blog post with tips for surviving an elimination diet on vacation. Not that I’m doing any sort of elimination diet right now, BUT I know them all too well. I have taken many trips away when I had a restricted diet, and it’s not all that enjoyable. Of course, the thought of having to give up some of your favorite foods, especially while on vacation, is definitely a scary one for most people! However, as hard as an elimination diet may be, it certainly has the potential to be very beneficial in the long run.  If you choose to embark on an elimination diet (removing processed foods, ones you have allergies or sensitivities to, and other harmful substances like chemicals ) with a vacation on the horizon, you know how important compliance is in order to start the process of healing from the inside out. If you happen to be one of these people, you know it’s not always easy, especially if you’re ...

The 5 Best Adaptogens for Stress Reduction

Image
Dr. Jason Fung is stopping by the blog today to share a bit about using adaptogens for stress. Enjoy, everybody—and be sure to share any questions you have on the comment board.  “Adaptogens.” Something about the word is reminiscent of Transformers—you know, those robots that look like a normal automobile or airplane—and then turn into something so much more powerful. In truth, adaptogens aren’t that different from Transformers. They look like normal herbs, roots, and mushrooms. You’ll perhaps even recognize some of the adaptogens discussed in this article and will have eaten them before. But adaptogens aren’t just normal plants and mushrooms. Research tells us that adaptogens can transform us into people who are less affected by stress.(1) And, in the modern world, being less stressed certainly sounds like a superpower, right? So, let’s take a research-based look at how adaptogens work and which ones you might try. We’ll focus in particular on the best adaptogens for stress...

You Can’t Have It All

Image
Today I’d like to revisit a topic I first wrote about five years ago: The Boxed Lunch, Or You Can’t Have It All . I’ve been thinking a lot about this concept of mindful eating at special occasions (or everyday occasions!) lately as I find myself once again mindlessly (that’s the key word!) partaking in all of the courses – apps, drinks, a big dinner, dessert. Because it is normal. Because everyone else is doing it. Because I’m a grown up and it’s fun to partake. I previously wrote: IF YOU DON’T PAY ATTENTION, IT’S EASY TO OVEREAT SIMPLY BECAUSE IT’S THE DEFAULT. It hadn’t occurred to me that one should choose which of those foods and drinks to have on a special occasion. As an adult, I figured everyone was supposed to have little of everything. This was my healthy tipping point and the start of the path to reaching a normal, healthy weight over a year later. It was the start of more mindful eating. What my aunt said is true: if you do have appetizers, the bread basket...

Air Fryer Chicken Breast Recipe

Image
This air fryer chicken breast recipe is stuffed full of delicious yumminess! Air fryer recipes are becoming more popular these days, and for good reason. Particularly with those who enjoy clean eating foods and foods lower in fat. Air fryers are small enough to sit on your counter, and you can make delicious foods that are normally deep-fried with a fraction of the oil. Foods such as cheese sticks or fish n’ chips . WHAT IS AN AIR FRYER? It’s a countertop appliance that cooks pretty much exactly like a convection oven, except with a bit more “force”. The quick movement of the air circulated by the fan should mimic the crispiness of a deep fried food. Is it exactly the same result? No, not exactly. But it gets close in most cases. And considering the small amount of oil needed for most foods, it’s a far healthier option than deep frying. However, you will rarely achieve that perfect outer crisp that only a deep fryer can provide. But it’s still very tasty food that is far healthie...

Summer Adventures on the South Shore

Image
Hi, friends! We had quite a fun weekend here on the South Shore. After a busy July 4th on Cape Cod, our weekend was fairly low-key and very relaxing, but, at time same time, we kept ourselves occupied with a number of family adventures, including some old favorites as well as new ones! First up, swimming at the YMCA! We’ve been members for nearly a year now, but had NO IDEA we could use the outdoor pool. It actually used to be a separate Y membership, but now it’s included in the family membership. Woohoo! We were psyched to learn about this benefit, and we’ve visited the pool a ton since! 🙂 Our friends told us about an incredible new flavor at Hornstra Farms, so we obviously needed to check it out. It’s their “birthday cake” flavor with a July 4th spin on it – vanilla ice cream mixed with chocolate cake and red and blue sprinkles. OMG, it was amazing! It’s a limited edition, so if you’re local, make sure you stop by ASAP to try it. I promise, it’s WORTH IT! On Sunday morning,...
