Has Your Metabolism Slowed Down? [Faster Metabolism Blueprint]

Image
The Faster Metabolism Blueprint is an assessment to determine if your metabolism has slowed down and whether or not you need to adjust your nutrition. Has your metabolism slowed down? HAS YOUR METABOLISM SLOWED DOWN? If you’ve been dieting for what seems like forever (and not seeing results), whether it’s for a special event or even just to hit your goal weight, it might be time for a break. Dieting is exhausting, isn’t it? But, how do you take a diet break without piling on the pounds? It might be time to try a reverse diet, but how do you know if you need one? Has your metabolism slowed down? WHAT IS REVERSE DIETING? Reverse dieting is a strategic eating plan designed to gradually increase your daily caloric intake in order to boost metabolism and help your body burn more calories. Reverse dieting helps the body recover from the damage caused by strict diets and has benefits for mental and hormonal health as well. Sometimes called the ‘diet after a diet,’ a reverse ...

Dear Mark: Maximum Aerobic Function (MAF) Training

Image
For today’s edition of Dear Mark, I’m going to be answering questions about Maximum Aerobic Function, or MAF. If this is your first time hearing the term, MAF refers to a method of endurance training that maximizes the function of your fat-burning aerobic system. I’ve come down hard on conventional or popular modes of endurance training in the past for being too stressful and reliant on sugar. MAF training is the opposite: low stress and reliance on body fat. Let’s dive right in to the questions: What is MAF training? MAF trains your aerobic fat-burning system to be more efficient and produce greater output at the same “intensity.” It means slowing the hell down to go faster. It means the slower you go, the more fat you’re burning and the better your mitochondria are getting at utilizing fat for energy. It means training up to but not over your maximum aerobic heart rate. MAF was coined by Phil Maffetone, who came up with an ingenious way to calculate your max aerobic heart rate: ...

Definitive Guide to Carb Timing and Carb Cycling

Image
The Primal Blueprint is generally considered a low-carb way of eating, especially in contrast to the Standard American Diet and the like. We’re not anti-carb. My Big-Ass Salad is a huge bowl of carbs from vegetables, after all. We’re selective about the sources of our carbs and generally mindful about how many we take in. Given that, readers always want to know the “right” way to incorporate carbs. Which carb sources? How many? When? How often? The Primal Blueprint Food Pyramid and Carb Curve provide answers to the first two questions. The latter two… well, those are more complicated. I’ve written about these topics many times, but the questions keep on coming. Today I’m going to try to condense the main points into one post. I’ll touch on some issues you’ve raised in the comments of recent posts, too. In truth, I keep getting questions because there are so few definitive answers about the optimal way to incorporate carbs in your diet. Underlying hormonal and metabolic health, ac...

In under 5 minutes, you can have this delicious, fresh and filling salad for lunch, dinner or just a side dish to your main meal. Either way, it’s a very nutritious addition to your table. A good spinach salad can include many different ingredients, depending on your preferences. I tend to enjoy fresh berries and nuts on mine, but some folks prefer dried fruits such as cranberries or simply more vegetables to round out the texture and flavor. And of course, your dressing choice is critical with this type of salad. DRESSING FOR SPINACH SALAD Over the years, I’ve done a few dressing recipes that go well with different types of spinach salads. These are the ones that have always tasted best. HOW TO MAKE A GOOD SPINACH SALAD The key with spinach salads is to keep your ingredients simple and as fresh as possible. To me, dried fruits such as cranberries would be the only ex...

What You Eat Determines What You Burn [Wine Bus]

Image
I just wanted to share a really visual for understanding how our metabolism burns macronutrients. I know many of you (myself included) enjoy the occasional glass of wine… especially now, am I right?!? But did you know that too much wine, or any alcoholic beverage for that matter, can slow down fat loss? Or even stop it altogether? ⠀ Let me explain. Your metabolism is like a bus. And the foods you eat are passengers waiting to board. Under normal circumstances, the metabolism will burn anything you’ve eaten recently first, starting with carbohydrates then moving on to fat. ⠀ Once the body has burned its way through your most recent meal, it’ll work its way on to any stored carbohydrates or fats. This is where fat loss occurs. However, alcohol (yes, even that delicious mommy wine you’re dreaming about having this evening) gets priority boarding. That means it’s burned off before absolutely everything else. Sounds like a good thing, right? Well… ⠀ What it actually means is ...
