2016 Yankee Homecoming 5K Road Race

Good morning!

On Tuesday evening, my sister and I ran the Yankee Homecoming 5K in Newburyport, Massachusetts. It was a gorgeous night (and not too hot) and the location couldn’t have been more perfect. Newburyport is absolutely adorable, and I definitely want to spend more time there soon!

The race started and finished at Newburyport High School. Parking was a little tricky, but, luckily, we found a spot on a side street about 5 minutes away.

Registration was a piece of cake. We didn’t wait in line and got our bibs right away.

There was actually a shortage of safety pins, but my sister and I managed to finagle two each, so everything worked out in the end.

Ready to run!

With about 10 minutes to spare, my sister and I lined up at the start line.

And, before we knew it, we were off and running!

The course was mostly flat and quite scenic, winding through adorable residential neighborhoods and then into the Newburyport downtown area and along the ocean. At mile 2 or so, I actually started to appreciate just how flat the course was, but, unfortunately, that feeling didn’t last very long.

At mile 2.5-ish, there was a good-size hill, which I managed to “make my bitch” and, truthfully, I gave it everything I had, thinking I was close to the end of the race. Well, the actual end of the race was up and over another hill… and it almost killed me. Haha!

I wanted to walk SO BADLY, but, with so many spectators and the finish line in sight, I didn’t let myself. I finished in 26:16 (8:28), which was a PW (personal worst) and even slower than the 5Ks I ran while pregnant, but, hey, I had a fun time and really enjoyed the race. It was well-organized with a beautiful course and lots of spectators. I really couldn’t have asked for a better race experience.

Plus, the post-race celebration with my sister in Newboryport was awesome!

After the race, we drove about 5 minutes away to the downtown area and scored a table outside overlooking the ocean at the Black Cow. It was wonderful.

It was a gorgeous evening and post-race drinks were definitely necessary!

We also ordered dinner and chatted well into the evening. It was such a nice way to spend a summer night with my sis!

Question of the Day

Newburyport fans: What should we do/where should we go the next time we visit?
