10 to 1 Man Maker + Running Workout

Good morning and happy Monday, friends!

Let’s kick off the week with a killer workout! Are you guys ready for this one? It incorporates two of my favorite, full-body movements (Man Makers + running) for a seriously high-intensity and challenging workout. It’s a “good” one for sure!

10 to 1 Man Maker + Running Workout

How to do this workout: Perform 10 Man Makers and then run 400 meters. After that, you’ll do 9 Man Makers followed by a 400 meter run. Then, 8 Man Makers, 400 meter run, 7 Man Makers, 400 meter run… all the way down to 1 Man Maker with a final 400 meter run. You’ll run a total of 2.5 miles during this workout, but you can always reduce the running to 200 meters. It’ll still be an awesome workout!

Ok, so you’ve never done a Man Maker before? You’re in for a treat!! Start with two dumbbells, one in each hand, in the top of a push-up position. Do a push-up and then perform a row, right arm and then left arm, with the dumbbells.

Then, jump your feet in and perform a Squat Clean to Thruster with the dumbbells.

Once you stand up and finish the Thruster, you’ve completed one rep.

After that, bring the dumbbells back to the ground and repeat. Here’s a great video that shows the full Man Maker movement from start to finish.

Happy sweating!!

Interesting Blog Posts

We got some really cool traits from our romantic dalliances with Neanderthals and other archaic human, but also some bad ones.

Beautiful (but unfortunate) graphical representation of the changing American diet. Note the declines of beef and whole milk, the ascent of cooking oil and low-fat dairy, and weep.

In Tampa Bay (and likely elsewhere), “farm-to-table” doesn’t mean much.

Pediatric hospitals are realizing the importance of sleep for their in-patients’ recovery, but the proposed solutions aren’t very impressive. White noise machines won’t cut it. They need to do something about all the lights.

Everything Else

The strange story of the Afghan tamale vendor living on the Wyoming frontier at the turn of the 19th century who slaughtered his own animals halal-style, served Indians when many businesses wouldn’t, evaded public censure because his food was too good, and eventually paved the way for today’s small but persistent Wyoming Muslim community.

I can’t improve it, so I’m just going with the headline: “Sausage-Wielding Gang Attacks Vegan Cafe.”

This is why we paddle.

This is just crazy.

Hilarious. You can stop reading after the headline, though.

Watch out how you clean your grills.

Is There Any Health Benefit to Enhanced Waters?

You know it’s important to drink plenty of water. Not only does this naturally zero-calorie beverage help hydrate the 60 percent of you that is water, but it’s vital for keeping your energy levels up and your organs in working order. But are there any added benefits to the enhanced waters on the market? Let’s take a look.

Alkaline Water/Ionized Water
Alkaline water refers to water that has a higher pH than regular or filtered tap water. It can be naturally alkaline (such as most mineral waters) or created by using an ionizer. Advocates of alkaline water say the typical Western diet makes our bodies acidic and that drinking alkaline water is one way to get your body to an optimum pH. Some studies have supported a benefit to alkaline water. A 2009 study out of Switzerland suggested drinking alkaline mineral water could help preserve bone density. These ideas are intriguing, but the body of research is pretty small at this point, so take it with a grain of salt.

Mineral Water
Mineral water contains trace elements and minerals from its source. An Italian paper from 2006 catalogued the variety of mineral waters along with their specific use. For instance, it’s suggested that “sulfurous water” can help treat diabetes (helping to lower blood sugar and other symptoms of the disease), and “bicarbonate water” can neutralize the stomach acid involved in gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Water with Electrolytes
Electrolytes are a set of minerals — sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium and phosphate — that help regulate the fluid balance in your body. Tap water contains electrolytes, but the amounts probably vary depending on the source. You lose electrolytes (especially sodium) through sweating, and while it’s important to replace them, you don’t necessarily need to do so in an all-in-one beverage, such as electrolyte-enhanced water. You get plenty of electrolytes through the food you eat, so as long as you’re eating, drinking tap water is just fine. Two exceptions are if you’re doing endurance training or you have diarrhea. Those two conditions make replenishing electrolytes particularly important — and make eating meals particularly hard.

Flavor- and Vitamin-Enhanced Water
As long as we’re talking about flavored water with no sugar or sugar substitutes, this can be a great choice. People often find it easier to drink more flavored water than plain water. As for vitamins, again: Your best bet is to get vitamins and minerals through food (they’re often better absorbed that way).
