37th Birthday Recap

Image
Year #37 is off to a great start so far! My birthday kicked off with an awesome (and super sweaty – holy humidity) workout at KFIT . The workout was a lot of fun – a nice mix of running, rowing, and strength. And the best part was that PR-ed my 1RM Power Clean by 5 pounds, which was quite a nice surprise since I haven’t tested it in years and typically avoid 1 rep max days. (I’m not usually a fan of lifting heavy or the pressure that I put on myself when it comes to maxes, so I just skip those days!) After KFIT, I headed home, showered, worked for a bit, and then ate leftover birthday cake for lunch. I mean, when else is it okay to eat cake for lunch? I worked for a few more hours and then met up with Mal for a shopping adventure at the  Derby Street Shoppes . Maybe it’s because I work from home and have grown to enjoy “shopping” via Stitch Fix , but I’m just not a fan of going to a store and trying things on. It’s just so overwhelming, and I have no idea what to buy. Thankfully

Is Keto for Everyone?—Cautions, Caveats, and Contraindications

Image
In a few months, I’ll be  releasing a book extolling the virtues of a ketogenic diet. I’m currently several months into a ketogenic experiment, which is going well. I just wrote a Definitive Guide explaining why you should consider going keto. I’m on record as stating that everyone should dip into ketosis from time to time. You’d think I’d recommend that  everyone go keto. Right? There are caveats. There are contraindications. There are very good reasons for a person  not to go keto, or at least to take a few extra precautions.  Today, I’m going to tell you when you should exercise particular care when considering  a ketogenic diet . If You Have Diabetes In type 2 diabetes, the evidence is crystal clear: Ketogenic diets work, perhaps better than any other diet. In obese diabetics , a ketogenic diet improved glycemic control to a greater degree than a low-calorie diet. And just recently, a study came out showing that very-low carb ketogenic diet advice was more effective at s

Those Summer Days

I am living the dream working all morning and playing at the pool all afternoon. I am  almost in that sweet spot where Mazen can play with his friends and I can sit and read a book in a chair, but not quite. He is still learning to swim, so I need to keep an eye on him, and I jump in to play with them a good bit. But the difference in his swimming in just one week of regular pool visits and two days of swim lessons is incredible!! He is a fast learner, and I’m sure by the end of the summer he’ll be able to swim a whole pool length no problem (or sooner!) I’ve been doing a Cook Smarts meal plan this week. We had these noodles with veggies and beef on Monday night for dinner, and I took them to the pool for lunch on Tuesday. They were even better chilled! We celebrated Lauren’s birthday while there! I made this Cook Smarts meal – chicken in a sun-dried tomato and spinach cream sauce with pesto potatoes for dinner last night, and it totally rocked!!! That sauce was out of this

Clean Eating Mandarin Orange Chicken Salad With Dried Cranberries

This idea came from a facebook fan. She said her 4 year old son just loves this salad. This really peeked my interest because as of late, Mini Chef has been going through a stage where he does not… Read more → from The Gracious Pantry http://ift.tt/2sP35sU
