High Low High 19 + Last Week’s (Meh) Workouts

Image
Hey, hey! Happy Monday, friends! How was your weekend? Ours was really nice. It was fairly low-key, but we had plenty of fun too. Here’s a recap of our weekend via  High Low High , which also includes my less-than-stellar workouts from last week. More on that in a minute. Ok, here we go with High Low High! HIGH : I did CrossFit Open WOD 17.2 on Friday morning and linked together 15 T2B, which is a PR for me. Woohoo! I could barely do 2-3 linked during last year’s Open, so they’ve come a long way! LOW : Having 7 minutes left of the 12-minute workout to get, oooooh, zero Bar Muscle-Ups. ZERO!?! It was so disappointing. I got 3 BMUs in last year’s Open, so I figured I’d at least get a few, but it just wasn’t my day. Boo. Although, I’m not super surprised either since I hadn’t done a single one since last’s year Open. I didn’t even practice before 17.2, which was a dumb move for sure. Oh, well… onto 17.3! HIGH : Sharing a donut with Qman after CrossFit. H...

To Boost Your Health, Spice Up Your Life

When we season our foods with spices, we tend to have flavor in mind. But herbs and spices have myriad health benefits. They can help us to cut down on salt and — since they are plant-based — spices may pack an impressive phytonutrient punch, with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory or even anti-cancer potential. In fact, registered dietitian nutritionist Carrie Dennett recently compared your spice cabinet to “a natural pharmacy in your kitchen.” So are some herbs and spices more potent than others? Yes, actually. “Generally the brighter or darker in color, the higher the antioxidant content,” says registered dietitian nutritionist Serena Ball, MS, RD, who writes about food and nutrition at Teaspoon of Spice , as well as for Healthy Eats. “Think turmeric.”  Ball advises health-minded cooks to keep spices such as cinnamon, cayenne and cumin on hand, as well. “Several teaspoons of cinnamon a day could help increase insulin sensitivity in people who have diabetes,” she says. Cayenn...

Clean Eating Thai Peanut Chicken Recipe

Image
I’ve really been into Thai flavors lately. I go through phases quite often when all I want for an entire week or two is a particular type of food. I’m not sure why, but as long as I keep it clean,… Read more → from The Gracious Pantry http://ift.tt/2n20ghV

Kerala Lamb Curry

Image
Kerala lamb curry forgoes the thick, soup-like sauce often associated with curry. Instead, chunks of meat soak up almost all the sauce, creating a fragrant stew of spices and meat that can be eaten with a fork, no spoon or rice needed. Recipes for Kerala lamb curry vary slightly in their cooking methods and ingredient lists. What the recipes all share are tender chunks of lamb, plus lots of spices. This recipe uses ingredients you probably have in your kitchen already—coriander, turmeric, onion, garlic, shallot, ginger, coconut milk—and a few you might have to search out, like Kashmiri chili powder and fresh curry leaves. If you have an Indian grocery store in your city, this recipe is a good reason to visit. Or, you can hunt and gather the ingredients on the Internet. You’ll be rewarded with a richly flavored and complex dish with outstanding levels of antioxidants from the wide array of spices . Plus, you’ll also get all the good stuff that lamb brings to a dish, like 8 essential...

Lily Kunin Makes Clean Eating Simple in Her Debut Cookbook

Image
For health coach and blogger Lily Kunin, healthy eating is about what makes her body feel its best. This simple philosophy is the basis for her debut cookbook, Good Clean Food , in which Kunin proves that plant-based eating can be personalized to meet an individual’s needs. In it, you’ll find a bowl builder that will help you customize your perfect grain bowl, and a focus on how food can make you feel, as opposed to what meal you’re planning for. We caught up with the founder of Clean Food Dirty City to talk blogging, cooking styles and eating clean in the Big Apple.   Food Network: When and why did you adopt a plant-based diet? Lily Kunin: I suffered from migraines and vertigo starting in high school, and for a period of about 5 years I had pretty severe symptoms. I tried everything from conventional medicine to alternative therapies and nothing really worked until one therapist said the problem could be my diet. And after some trial and error I gave up gluten, and for the f...

How My World Changed!

It’s Friday, everyone! And that means another Primal Blueprint Real Life Story from a Mark’s Daily Apple reader. If you have your own success story and would like to share it with me and the Mark’s Daily Apple community please contact me here . In fact, I have a contest going right now. So if you have a story to share, no matter how big or how small, you’ll be in the running to win a big prize. Read more here .  My story is a fun one. Nothing crazy drastic, but fun nonetheless. It started January of 2012, when I first started reading success stories from MDA. At this point in my life, I was no stranger to the human body and how best to treat it. I exercised moderately, and ate plenty of vegetables and fish as part of my normal diet. I tried to get at least 6-7 hours sleep and remained injury-free. So when I first started reading, I thought this makes sense. It’s working obviously—however, I’m not going to take the plunge quite yet. Also, wasn’t quite sure what exactly this Ma...
