Is Iron the New Cholesterol?

Image
One thing I’ve realized being in this game for so long is that if you’re convinced that meat truly is deadly, you’re not going to stop looking for reasons why. They’ve tried blaming just about every part of meat over the years, including the protein itself, the saturated fat, the cholesterol, the methionine, the char on BBQ, and even the obscure compounds like TMAO or Neu5gc. The latest component of meat they’ve zeroed in on is iron—the essential mineral responsible for energy production and a host of other vital functions. The experts’ track record with all the other “evil meat components” has many of my readers skeptical, so they asked me to weigh in on iron. Iron is an essential mineral, integral in the production of energy and the creation of blood cells. If pregnant women don’t get it, they can’t deliver oxygen and nutrients to their growing babies. If kids don’t get it, they shortchange their mental and physical development. If adults don’t get it, their basic day-to-day phys...

Tropical Farro Breakfast Bowl

Image
^^When you and your bro are making spring break plans. Holla!! We’re heading to the Florida Keys for spring break and can’t wait! Normally I’d want to plan a warm weather trip for February – when the cold blues peak – but due to Mazen’s spring break we won’t be going until April. But at least Florida will be warmer then! We had donuts for breakfast on Monday morning from Sugar Shack. The missing bites were because Mazen and I got into them on Sunday before I could take a photo! I love me some sprinkle donuts. Look at the perfect rainbow that Thomas’s coffee mug made on the above shot. Looks like magic! On the topic of the tropics, I have a delicious tropical breakfast bowl to share with you. I have a dietetic intern – Emily – who is spending the semester with me. She’ll be fine tuning her “nutrition communication and food science skills” by helping me with some KERF projects, posts, and recipes. One of our goals is to share recipe formulas with you guys. So rather than detail...

Wegmans (Organic Kombucha) Is Magical

Image
I’ve partnered with Wegmans to bring you this blog post. As always, thank you for supporting Carrots ‘N’ Cake! As you guys might remember, I am a long-time fan of Wegmans . They’ve made their way to Massachusetts with 6 locations, and I seriously love to visit. There’s a location about 25 minutes away, so we’ll pop in from time-to-time to do our family’s grocery shopping, especially if we’re in the area. In recent months, I’ve heard more and more about the Natick Wegmans location and just how incredible it is. A number of people have told me how much I would love it, so when  Wegmans  reached out about trying their Organic Kombucha , I knew it was the perfect excuse to see what the Natick location was all about. Verdict: The Natick store was everything that I expected and more: Amazing, massive, and truly one-stop shopping! Check out everything it has to offer ! Mal and Quinn wanted to come along for my Wegmans adventure, so we drove out mid-morning to do our grocery sh...

Emails Reveal: Coca-Cola’s Shocking Plot To Take Us Down

Image
While working on my new book last year, I received a STARTLING email from U.S. Right To Know. They had obtained an internal email from Coca-Cola… and when I read it, I was shocked. Right there in black in white, I read how Coca-Cola tried to lobby the FDA against us, the Food Babe Army. In the months following our successful campaigns to get “yoga mat” out of Subway, the artificial dyes out of Kraft Mac & Cheese, and the caramel coloring out of Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte, Coca-Cola took aim at our ability to convince major food companies to change. You see, we were hurting their bottom line, and they wanted to put that to a halt. As I read through Coca-Cola’s correspondence I couldn’t believe the lengths they had gone to try to stop our movement. An email proposal was sent to the head of the FDA, written by  none other than Alex Malaspina.  Alex is a former senior vice president at Coca-Cola who founded the front group International Life Sciences Institute (IL...

Boys + Toys

Image
Back to work side eye. Hope everyone had a nice MLK weekend. Thomas worked yesterday but Mazen has off two days. Winter break x 1,000! The boys and their toys: VIDEOS On Friday we often plan for pizza nights. Thomas makes an awesome grilled pizza using Whole Foods brand pre-made dough, tomato sauce, mozzarella and whatever veggies/toppings we have on hand. This week it was jalapenos, pepperoni, and artichokes! Plus I made a kale salad with lacinato kale, peppers, tomatoes, and Cava hummus for a creamy dressing. On Saturday morning I got up early to meet these lovely ladies at the gym. I had a peanut butter + banana + coffee breakfast before I left. It’s weird – if I have even one small bite of vegetables or meat in me I feel soooo full and can’t do cardio, but fruit/fat/coffee/bread/cereal – none of them bother me at all and I can jump around within 30 minutes of consumption. This is my new favorite workout tank . Luckily it’s only $11-15, depending on the Old Nav...
