What Is Carolina Mustard Barbecue Sauce?
Mustard in barbecue sauce? Oh, yes! This Carolina mustard barbecue sauce recipe is my most delicious barbecue sauce recipe yet!
If you are used to tomato based barbecue sauce, you aren’t alone. Most folks don’t think about mustard when they think of barbecue sauce. But I’m here to tell you, it’s fabulous.
History
Interestingly enough, this sauce is not technically an American sauce, although it was traced back to German settlers in the 18th century here in the States. Germany love their mustard to this day. The 18th century was no different.
What Does Carolina Mustard BBQ Sauce Taste Like?
It’s pretty spice and simultaneously sweet. Almost like a spicy honey mustard dressing with a hint of chipotle.
What You’ll Need
1 cup yellow mustard – Look for mustard without any added sugar. Many brands add sugar.
½ cup maple syrup – Use the real stuff. Substitutes will make this sauce somewhat lackluster.
2 tbsp. coconut sugar – You can also use Sucanat or Monk fruit. Any granular sweetener you usually use will work here.
½ cup apple cider vinegar – Don’t substitute with a different type of vinegar. Apple cider vinegar really makes the sauce.
1 tsp. ground chipotle powder – While this does add a fair amount of spice, it won’t overpower the sauce. The flavor is mild and well balanced.
1 tbsp. tomato paste – Use tomato paste without any sugar added.
1 tsp. coconut aminos – You can also use soy sauce if you prefer.
1 tbsp. garlic powder – Garlic granules work well too.
1 tsp. ground black pepper – White pepper will work too. Use what you have. If you are worried about the amount of spice, cut the pepper in half or omit it completely.
¼ tsp. salt – I used pink Himalayan salt, but use whatever salt you normally cook with.
