Weight Change: Density + Volume

Image
How To Gain Weight I was talking with a friend about weight change the other day. We were actually discussing ways to gain weight. When you need to gain weight, you can add some extra snacks, but you can only eat so much volume. Your stomach can’t expand beyond a certain point, and you certainly don’t want to walk around uncomfortably stuffed all the time. So what do you do? You increase the energy (a.k.a. calorie) density of your foods. You eat more trail mix or nut butters or smoothies packed with foods higher in calories and lower in water. Rather than watermelon you want to eat dried fruit dehydrated of water but dense in nutrients and calories. Makes perfect sense right? But what about weight loss? If the weight gain plan seems so simple, why does the weight loss plan seem so much more complicated? Just like our stomachs can only get so big, they also can’t go empty. We can’t go from eating a usual volume of food to not eating at all. Walking around with a grumbling stomach ...

Healthy French Toast Recipe

This healthy french toast recipe is the perfect replacement for any basic, regular french toast recipe. Is French toast really French? Does anyone know? I mean, if the French invented this, I think I… Read more → from The Gracious Pantry https://ift.tt/2NCJ6b5

What’s TMAO, and What Does It Have to Do With My Health?

Image
With the last few weeks’ definitive guide and follow-up on fish, a reader asked me about trimethylamine N-oxide, or TMAO. What is it? TMAO is the latest justification given for why eating meat just has to be bad for you. Saturated fat didn’t take . Animal protein didn’t work . Iron was a dud . IGF-1 hasn’t panned out . Methionine isn’t enough . So now they’re using TMAO to convince you not to eat that steak. How’s it supposed to work? How TMAO Happens When certain gut bacteria encounter choline (found in eggs and liver) or carnitine (found in meat, especially red meat), some of it is converted to trimethylamine, or TMA. TMA is the compound that gives fish its “fishy odor.” Fish is actually extremely high in TMA, which I’ll discuss later on. Then, the liver converts a portion of the TMA to TMAO. Studies have shown that elevated serum levels of TMAO are linked to heart disease , type 2 diabetes, kidney disease, and even all-cause mortality. There’s definitely some heterogeneity a...

A Walk In The Park

Image
^^ This little man is getting so close to walking! He went from slow crawling to fast crawling and pulling up SO FAST! He’s cruising all around – from ottoman to couch and back. He’s also so curious and loves to see what is inside things – drawers, cabinets, etc. He’s more curious than his brother was! I can tell we are going to have our hands very full in the next year+. Mazen’s treasure box is off limits! He also LOVES to put things in his mouth – leaves, crumbs, and omg – he had a PENNY in his mouth the other day that he found under the rug. That was a scary one. We both had a little cold come on over the weekend, and so that hasn’t been very fun. But I did figure out how to put him on my back (I watched a video on You Tube for tips) and he took a cat nap on me. It was so sweet. And I got SO much done with him on my back compared to my front. I made a whole dinner! Chicken Tacos x10 We made chicken tacos last week and ate them too many times. Dinner, lunch, dinner, lunch....

Fashion Finds from Amazon Under $20

Image
Hi, guys! So, I did a little shopping on Amazon the other day. I don’t know if you have stumbled onto the world of Amazon Fashion , but everything is soooo affordable and so cute. I recently bought a bunch of different items, so I thought I’d do a little show-and-tell for you guys. It seems like you’re really into these affordable fashion finds since I’ve gotten so many comments and questions about them lately. One question that I’ve received a number of times is about the quality of the clothing. I’d compare the quality of the tank tops to something you’d buy at Target. The long-sleeve tops were a bit more high-quality. As far as sizing goes, I ordered everything in XS. If you’re in between sizes I’d order down. It seems like the sizing runs a bit big, except for the Minthunter Long Sleeve Color Block Top, which I wish I ordered in a small.       Chuanqi Button V-Neck Tank ($17) – I love this top with the buttons and fine-ribbed detail. It’s a great basic tha...

Dear Mark: Is Fish Enough, Do Carnivores Really Need It, and More

Image
For today’s edition of Dear Mark, I’m answering several questions you guys asked in response to the fish post from last week. First, is being a pescatarian enough? Can you get what you need from seafood without eating meat, dairy, or eggs? Next, how important is fish for a carnivore? Third, how’s that Whole Foods farmed salmon? Healthy or not? Then I write a bit about canned cod liver, the underrated seafood, followed by a short blurb about whether we should worry about wild salmon sustainability as well as a question about taking chlorella to reduce heavy metal absorption from fish. Let’s go: Adore this Mark! Thank you! As a basically pescatarian this has been a wonderful insight. I find it too difficult or just a bit heavy digesting meat often, but I live for seafood! Quick follow up question- anything I could be missing not eating meat, dairy or eggs and just seafood? If so how best can I combat those issues? I’m struggling to come up with any major deficiencies you’ll incu...

Easy Pork Tacos

Image
We have made this recipe several times and I just had to share the how-to! These easy pork tacos are one of those flex recipes that you don’t need to measure precisely. I’m also not going to tell you how to spend 10 hours smoking pork on a Big Green Egg. If you are not a grillmaster yourself or have a partner who is, I’d recommend using simple grilled chicken or buying some already smoked pork. Or perhaps you could prepare some shredded pork or chicken in the crockpot! BBQ tofu or seasoned beans would be a good way to make this vegetarian too. And OMG – blacked fish! Bottom line: your protein options are endless. The Secret’s In The Slaw But the real secret to why this recipe is so good is the slaw. We jazz up a bag of 365 store-bought slaw from Whole Foods with red pepper, fire-roasted corn (frozen at Whole Foods), freshly chopped cilantro and a simple dressing made with lime, olive oil and a hint of mayo. I don’t love a ton of 100% purple cabbage on my tacos, so I love that this...
