Mr. Fixit

Image
^^Story of my life! So.much.energy. I picked Mazen up from school to discover him in possession of a calculator, aka his “math.” He did an impressive job plugging in numbers and reporting the answer! We had a great afternoon playing outside. (Except for the fact that I got pollen all in my eyelashes and it trickled down to my eyeballs and I spent about an hour crying.) The highlight of the afternoon was when a truck came to remove a big branch from the neighbor’s yard that fell during strong winds. The kids loved watching them haul it into the chopper, and they especially loved seeing the guys climb the tree to cut down the rest of the branch. Officer Mazen went through our whole Star Wars band-aid collection fixing our little neighbor’s many scrapes! For dinner we made a Blue Apron meal – salmon with roasted potato and kale salad. Topped with crème fraîche! Yum. The kiddo version eventually got consumed after a lot of distracting construction worker playing! He has real

The Best Friggin’ Wing Recipe

Image
Guys. These wings ! My gosh, they are so friggin’ good! Seriously, everyone LOVES them. They’re such a big hit at parties and other get-togethers, and, bonus, they are SO EASY to make. Making the spice rub is probably the hardest part. Ha! This recipe is definitely going to be a go-to this summer. I can’t even explain how tasty these babies are! You gotta try ’em! Ingredients : 24 chicken wings Dry rub 1.5 tablespoon cayenne 1.5 tablespoon of smoked (or regular) paprika 3 tablespoons sugar 3 tablespoons salt dash of pepper Sauce 1/2 cup BBQ sauce 1/4 cup Dijon mustard 1/8 cup coconut oil 1 tablespoon minced garlic Directions : Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Wash and dry wings. Prepare dry rub and then rub onto wings. Spread out wings on a baking sheet, covered in tinfoil, and cook for 30 minutes in the oven. Meanwhile, prepare the sauce in the mixing bowl. When the wings are finished cooking, take them out of the oven and dip each one into the sauce. Then, p

Happy Trails To You

Sarah and I took Gus on a walk on the greenway this morning to get some fresh air. We just didn’t feel like going inside the gym on such a pretty, crisp, fall-like day. We walked a 5k or so out there. (But GAH the pollen is insane right now!) I spent the rest of my morning working on recipes posts and editing the 200 pictures I took yesterday! Much needed shower break! And for lunch: a kale mix salad with caesar dressing, ham and gorgonzola and a homemade pumpkin muffin! Recipe TBA, but I think it’s the best muffin I’ve ever made. (Which isn’t saying much, just sayin’!) I am heading to pick Mazen up from school shortly, and we have no plans all afternoon, so I’ll have to see what he comes up with! Popular Blood Tests—the Facts, Ranges, and Alternatives You Should Know

Image
I’m of two minds when it comes to blood testing. For myself, I’m not a huge fan of obsessive, frequent testing and optimization. I have a good idea about how to optimize my health through the actions I take and the foods I eat, and by monitoring how I’m feeling, looking, and performing in response. It’s worked well for me. Whenever I do get a checkup or have blood drawn, my numbers are great. But many people are the opposite. They like to quantify what’s happening under the hood. That’s great, and often necessary. The problem is that there are big problems with many of the most common blood tests. A glaring problem for almost every blood test are the reference ranges used. What’s wrong with those? Reference ranges reflect what’s  common , not  normal . A reference range for a blood test refers to the values possessed by 95% of the normal population. Reference ranges for blood tests are based on the people who get lab tests. Who gets lab tests? People who go to the doctor, often be

Mas Oatmeal

Good morning! It’s live blogging Wednesday : ) Last night I went out with a bunch of girlfriends to Mas . (Go watch the cool video on their website to get the vibe – but turn your sound down!) We ate on the patio, as it was a gorgeous cool night. I didn’t capture all of our dishes, but everything was so good! These shrimp were my favorite (and the chocolate mousse we shared for dessert, as always!) This morning I am enjoying this parfait, which I created yesterday for an upcoming post with Quaker! You’ll have to wait for the post to hear the details, but there’s a secret ingredient that takes it over the top : ) Have a great morning friends, and I’ll see you for lunch!
