New Favorite Things

Warmer Weather Is Coming It’s almost porch season y’all!! We finished our screened-in porch the day it turned cold. I am SO PUMPED for warmer weather in our new addition. We want to get an area rug and we are looking into some sun-filtering shades that you can see through so we can enjoy breakfast hours outside. In the evenings, the sun is behind the house and the shade is perfect. I can’t wait to have dinner out here every night! My New Rothy’s I’ve been obsessed with Rothy’s for years. I like the round toe more than the point, actually, because I have wide feet. I LIVE in these 3/4 of the year (and my Allbirds all winter!) I recently got a new pair to replace my solid gray pair that I wore ALL the time. I’m totally obsessed with the colors. You can get $25 off here . (Did you know they also have sneakers, kids, and BAGS now?! The bags are quite expensive but beautiful and made with 100% recycled materials!) Cauliflower Snacks We recently bought these for Birch at Whole Foo...

10 Ways to Stop Secretly Sabotaging Yourself

Image
“I’ll start eating healthy again on Monday.” “I’m not really a gym person.” “I’ll probably gain the weight back anyway.” I hear statements like these all the time. If any of them sound remotely like something you’ve said recently, there’s a good chance you’re secretly sabotaging yourself. You might not even know that you’re doing it—but what you do know is that nothing in your life is changing. That probably sounds a little harsh but hear me out. Self-Sabotage Is Part of Human Nature I’ve worked with hundreds of clients who’ve battled their self-sabotage demons and you can, too. It starts by understanding the science behind why you do it. When your logical, conscious mind has a goal (like swapping bacon and eggs for fruit-on-the-bottom yogurt) is at odds with your subconscious mind (the side of you that believes fruit, cereal, and low-fat yogurt are part of a nutritious breakfast), your subconscious or “inner critic” tries to protect you and keep you safe from potential failure b...

Sometimes I struggle to keep my priorities straight

Image
I admit it. Sometimes I struggle to keep my priorities straight.⠀ ⠀ Especially when I’m short on time or low on energy. Between being a wife, a mom, a coach, and a blogger, my days get pretty hectic!⠀ ⠀ I try to get to the gym on most days. I really do! But sometimes, I just can’t. And I don’t want to make excuses. ⠀ ⠀ On those days I’ll usually just workout at home. ⠀ ⠀ For a long time though, I felt like my at-home workouts just weren’t measuring up.⠀ ⠀ A sequence of jumping jacks, some squats, a few push-ups or burpees…and then I realized that if I had a workout routine to follow in the gym, I needed one at home too.⠀ ⠀ I started putting together some strength training combos that only required a couple of hand weights and that made all the difference.⠀ ⠀ Years of perfecting the at-home strength training workout game paid off and #strongmadesimple was born.⠀ ⠀ Combining simplicity and function, the strength training-focused program provides a total ...

Should You Track Sleep?

Image
Tracking certain things makes sense, if you go for that sort of thing. Tracking step count is hard without a device. No one’s going to count every step they take in their head. You’d quickly go mad doing that. Same with pulse rate and heart rate variability —you could count the number of beats for 30 seconds and double it to get BPM, but that gets unwieldy after awhile and HRV requires a special device. But tracking sleep? On the surface, sleep tracking seems futile and pointless. If there’s anything you should know intuitively without having to measure, it should be whether or not you got a good night’s sleep. You wake up and see how you feel. Are you groggy? Irritable? Did you just crack an egg into the coffee maker, brush your teeth with light roast beans, kiss your dog good morning and let your spouse out to pee? You probably didn’t sleep very well. Are you rested? Full of vim and vigor? Can you perform basic bodily functions without requiring a mug of coffee first thing? You p...

How I Am Supporting My Immune System Right Now

Image
This week I was supposed to be in California attending the biggest natural products show in the U.S. I prepared weeks for this show. Everything from lining up meetings, to preparing frozen meals to take with me for my daughter to eat while I was busy working and lots and lots of packing! It was stressful but it was going to be so worth it. Truvani was going to have their first booth at this major trade show.  But on Monday night right as I finished putting all the last minute things in my bag, I got a text. The trip was cancelled because of the global health emergency going on right now.  When I told my daughter we weren’t going to California – she looked at me and almost cried. And I did too. Health scares always make me think about my overall health and mortality. And it reminds me of why I got into eating better in the first place.  It all started with a hospital trip. Even though it was for something that was completely out of my control, it made me realize ...

A Day In The Life: Mompreneur

Image
Missing old school KERF? Here’s a day in the life of a Mompreneur for ya!! 5:15 My alarm goes off playing Taylor Swift’s Wildest Dreams! Thomas and I get up but I’m slower than he is and he surprises me with coffee on my night stand <3 5:45 Leave house for my workout: Afterburn class. I have about 1/3 of my coffee before class but usually don’t have anything to eat. I greet my mug again on the ride home and am always so glad to have it! 6:10 Afterburn starts. This class is killer. I burn about 400 calories in 50 minutes according to my Apple Watch . 7:15 Back at home Birch is having breakfast. Thomas usually works until about 6:30 and then we tag team showering, breakfasts and getting Mazen on the bus. I take a speed shower and Birch terrorizes my room while I get dressed, pulling clothes out of drawers. I pick the room back up and we head back downstairs. He plays with his cups while I make breakfast. 7:30 We say goodbye to daddy who leaves for work. Birch didn’t eat ...

Dear Mark: Going Carnivore with Just Seafood, Protein Right after Fasted Workout?

Image
For today’s edition of Dear Mark, I’m answering a pair of questions from readers. The first one comes from the comment section of the excerpt from Paul Saladino’s new book : Can a seafood-only carnivore diet work? Will it miss anything? Is there anything to watch out for, add, or consider? The second one comes from the recent post about exercising during a fast . If someone’s trying to gain muscle, should they prioritize eating protein after a fast-breaking training session, or should they keep the fast going? Let’s go: I have a question though. Is eating a seafood-only carnivore diet well rounded enough Mark? Will I cover all my bases nutritionally? I eat plenty of fish heads (caught that post with interest) plus whole mollusks. Basically any seafood. What do you think? And how long term could this diet be? It can definitely be done. You’ll have no issues hitting your recommended nutrient intakes, since seafood is one of the most nutrient-dense classes of foods around. But you’...
